The San Juan Preservation Trust works with our local communities and people like you to permanently conserve and care for special places throughout the San Juan Islands.
Going into the long weekend, are you particularly grateful for a place here in the islands?
Do you have a place that is special to you and your family where you go for respite, connection, solitude?
As protectors of the more than 18,000 acres of land across 22 islands, it can be hard for us to choose from all of them. There are so many special places, and we want to hear about yours!
If you can't come up with just one of your own, can you guess where this photo was taken? It's certainly a beautiful view from one of our most notable achievements as a land trust, a place that we are very grateful will be protected in perpetuity.

We stumbled across this photo from a photo safari we did a few years ago out at the Vendovi Island Preserve and we thought it was very worth sharing.
The colors, the textures, and the way the motion is captured are all wonderful. What an image!

🌱 Fall is a terrific time to put plants in the ground! 🌱
Whether it's by seed, plug, or transplant, now is an opportune time. Between the plants entering into a phase of dormancy—which helps cope with the disturbance of being planted—and the winter rains watering them in for months, plants that go in the ground now will be that much more prepared for the summer heat next year.
Do you plan on putting any plants in the ground this autumn, or have you already? We'd love to hear about it!
It's an enriching activity that helps warm up the body during this otherwise wet and cold season, and it can provide inspiration throughout the winter that something will be sprouting up in the spring thanks to you.
And who knows how much your efforts will enrich the landscape for generations to come!
What a warming thought to have to hold onto as we go further into the Big Dark.

Looks like Turtle Back Mountain. Magical place.
I may be a bit prejudiced but my favorite place is Mt. Constitution because the Interpretive Center there at the top was built by my brother, Rolf Eriksen. Also, there is a time capsule in the tower at Mt. Constitution that has a part of my dad's ashes in it, Nils Eriksen. I think this picture was taken on the road to the top of Mt. Constitution at one of the switch backs. Did I guess right? Second favorite place is the Friday Harbor Laboratories. My dad did his PhD research there in the early 40's and my mother went to summer school there in the late 30's and early 40's, Carol Ray. In fact, there was a picture of my mother on the deck of the research vessel of Friday Harbor Laboratories, The Catalyst in the main building hallway of Friday Harbor Laboratories.
